In the field of Middle Eastern Dance, Adriana has proven herself to be an accomplished teacher, choreographer, professional dancer, producer and agent, make-up artist, and costumer. Over the past 40 years, her artistry has dazzled audiences at the White House, the Kennedy Center, embassies, countless charities and nightclubs throughout the country. Prior to launching her career in Middle Eastern dance, she was a jazz and interpretative dancer who performed song and dance acts throughout the United States and Europe. She also worked as a runway and photographers model. Adriana trained for many years in classical Russian ballet, jazz, modern dance, African, flamenco, and classical Indian (“Bharatha-Natyam”) and Spanish dance as well as Middle Eastern dance. Trained in voice, percussion, and piano, Adriana is also an accomplished musician. A graduate of the Boston Conservatory of Music and an expert on the history of ethnic dance, she contributes an enhanced professionalism to her classes and her shows. Adriana’s Middle Eastern dance work began at the Zara in Boston, MA, the first Greek club in the United States to feature Middle Eastern dance. By incorporating her extensive dance training, musicality, and showmanship into her performances, she defined a Middle Eastern dance style uniquely her own and set the standard for others to follow. Her intricate hand work, haunting veil work, sensuous floor work, and incredible backbends and leg splits were breathtaking. Adriana’s skill with cymbals was unsurpassed, and her drum solos were unbelievable. Her performances were not only flawless in technique, but also electric with personality and humor. A spontaneous dancer, Adriana connected with the musicians and the audience to produce entertainment of the highest order. Her interaction with the band—particularly the drummer and lead musicians—not only delighted the audience but also made her a favorite with the musicians. Band members were consistently in awe of her technical ability to never miss a note. In 1961, she moved to the Washington D.C. metropolitan area and was the star attraction at the first Middle Eastern club in the area the Port Said and at other clubs at the center of the Golden Years of Middle Eastern dance in this country. Truly, she was the prima dancer of that era. In 1972, she opened Adriana’s Mecca of Middle Eastern Dance, the first fully accredited, licensed, and bonded school of its kind. In a series of firsts, adriana introduced the workshop as a means of offering detailed instructions in all aspects of Middle Eastern dance and performance and established the first Middle Eastern dance troupe in the Washington, DC, metropolitan area. | back to top | next page |
