I do not rigidly define the dance, but rather seek to incorporate elements of jazz, modern dance and ballet, in an effort to preserve the freedom of interpretation which has characterized Middle Eastern dance throughout its history. I have also sought to revive the traditional forms of this art through costuming, dance technique, and studies in the art, customs, religion, and history of the Middle East. I have also worked to make the dance better not only in terms of technique, but also in terms of its entertainment value to the audience. Their appreciation and enjoyment of a performance is the ultimate measure of success. Just as the art of the dance is uplifted through the incorporation of many styles and forms, so too is the appreciation of its performance enlivened by an understanding of the culture and traditions that underlie the dance. In the 1970’s, my goal for my dance school was to create a Mecca, a center of higher learning, for artists and laymen to be able to obtain and contribute information regarding Middle Eastern culture and art. Today, I hope that this website will serve this same purpose. ~ Adriana
