Adriana’s Middle Eastern Dance Troupe, comprised of students at her school, performed widely throughout the Washington metropolitan area including appearances at the Kennedy Center, the White House, the Smithsonian, the British Embassy, Walter Reed Army Medical Center, and St. Elizabeth’s. Originally including 5 members, the troupe grew to 15 dancers led by 3 troupe captains. The troupe captain system offered the troupe a great deal of autonomy and adaptability. They entertained their audiences with a broad repertoire of Danse Orientale numbers, which included cane, sword, and candelabra dances, as well as folk, folkloric, and ethnic dances from North Africa and the Middle East. The troupe also performed floor work, used scarves and veils, played spoons, and balanced trays. Members of the troupe were taught to make their own wardrobes and did an exquisite job! The troupe was featured in an article entitled, “They Dance in the Old-Fashioned Way,” which appeared in the January 12, 1979, edition of The Washington Post Weekend section. TROUPE REPERTOIRE
